While taking these pictures I had the ballet/movie version of a book called Pessi and Illusia in my mind. The story was about a friendship between a troll and and elf, and it was originally almost an allegory of war. With Pessi being the pessimistic one and Illusia, who was from the land of rainbow, ever the optimist. It was also strongly about relationship between nature and humans.

But with this picture I can't help but think of a finnish song called Päivänsäde ja Menninkäinen. It's about a sunbeam, sure to die if left in the darkness - who falls in love with a goblin, who can only come out at night time. A romance doomed from the get go. I know the lyrics have been translated to english but I couldn't find them anywhere.


Aurinko kun päätti retken
siskoistaan jäi jälkeen hetken
päivänsäde viimeinen.
Hämärä jo metsään hiipi,
päivänsäde kultasiipi
juuri aikoi lentää eestä sen,
kun menninkäisen pienen näki
vastaan tulevan,
